In 2003 we launched an exciting program.
We began hosting a 6th grade outdoor classroom with a local charter
school,
teaching them about raising chemical free food and using natural
fertilizer & pest control methods.
The students experience everything from clearing
the plot, harvesting the composting worms from the
rabbit manure for potting soil, tilling the ground,
planting, transplanting, weeding and enjoying the
flavors of a chemical free, fresh, home grown product.
A great experience for us and all 44 of
them! We have since developed this pilot
program
into a regular part of the fall curriculum;
giving students a chance to learn
more about agriculture and how
it impacts their lives.
We are proud that the program meets
over 17 Sunshine State Educational
Math, Science and Language Standards
and we have written successful grants
to
support this program.
